Comment on An Introduction to Inline Assembly and Registers by Steve Rush

You brought back some memories of assembly-language hacking on the TRS-80. I got as far as writing a split-screen driver. Not a real windowing system, but the windows did have independent cursors and independent scrolling.

Bug: "...Number is 32 bits and CL is 16 bits..." Shouldn't that be CX? CL is an 8-bit register.

I agree. I switched to C++ from FreeBASIC just before this mindset set into, or maybe when it was just beginning to set it. I was completely taken by surprise by the incredible contrast between the Communities.

After not going back to the BASIC community for awhile, I tried to be true to the old BASIC Attitude in the C++ world, and I think I mainly did.

When I finally payed the Qmmunity a visit, I was again shocked by the change I noticed. I still hover around that place, but it's not the same anymore...

I apologize in advance for my post not being very constructive but I want to give my 2 cents.

Without much philosophy, rude behaviour should be tolerated only as an answer to rudeness and social unacceptable behaviour, like people promoting racism or pedophilia.

Someone taking the trouble to flame a newbie for asking a question instead of ignoring him or her shows that this person is, to put it in simple terms, ASSHOLE.

Actually, I'm more intimidated by the articles submitted so far, than with the very submission policy.

And yes, I know this discussion ended long ago.

I just discovered your site so give me a break.

Anyway, great site.

Yeah, it seems FB has alot of coders who started in the golden age of home computing.

I saw your codespank of Eliza and covered in my blog a few days ago. Great job.

I recall back when I first learned about programming computers, and I didn't have one.

I ended up filling a notebook up with handwritten basic code for a battle-tach style text based mech war simulator that I would take to my cousins house on the weekends and hack around on their Commodore 64.

Eventually I got my hands on an old out-dated IBM PC Monochrome green monitor, 2 5~" floppie drives..

once I set a ram drive to do my file swapping I was in heaven.

...

I have continued to code basic taking time off..

I have to agree with you. The development of exploring the code, trying things out, getting an idea and making it work, much more inspiring for me than copying something out of a book.

I wrote a pant program in QBasic, Several Text RPGs, a Roguelike battle simulator.. I have only one major half-finished project that I ported to FB.

The things I am working on now have taken me more than a year on and off and probably several more before I'm done. I do this because I love it.

Right now I am concurrently working on a game project that could be described as a Random RPG with elements of both Roguelike's and Text-Adventure's.

I like both of these types of games, MUD's.. etc. I dislike the lack of randomness in the TA genre, and the lack of plot depth in the RL's.

What I'm working on now is the Pasing engine. Once I get that done I want to merge my RL view with a TA interface and begin workin on the memory model for my mob AI. I want to have my mobs be smart enough to do anything the player can do, and be able to learn, make plans, and remember things and be able to talk with the player.

All this is a massive undertaking, and I don't know if I'll ever finish, but it sure is fun.

Happy coding!

Thank you. You have just inspired me to write my own MP3 player since my school laptop has disallowed MP3 codecs for Windows Media Player. :P
